Not so bright, but still early this morning we packed up and left Bulli to travel to Fitzroy Falls. We were introduced to our bus driver Barry who will be with us until we leave for Cairns.
Our first stop along the way was to a wildlife rescue center run by a woman who lives on the property. She has the expected cats, dogs, sheep, goats, and a pig which live along side the rescued wombats and wallabys. One of the jobs our group helped her to do was to build cages which could house koalas (though she doesn’t have any at the moment). We did lots of small projects like moving and stacking firewood, lining the driveway with rocks, cleaning out the wombat enclosures, organizing fencing material, and power washing equipment.
It was a great feeling to help out at the rescue and get to see up close some of the work being done there. We learned about the struggles they have had this year to rescue the wombats (especially the joeys - babies) and their successes as well. They are currently caring for one Joey, a pinkie, which needs round the clock care - feeding every 2 hours and maintaining a specific temperature and humidity which would mimic the mother’s pouch environment. We will be working with a similar organization tomorrow to help protect wombats in the wild.
On our way to our new cabins, we stopped at Carrington Falls and got some amazing views.
Once at the cabins, we settled in to make dinner and hang out. Since we are in the winter season, it gets dark early and our new cabins are more remote than the first ones so we spent our evening sitting around the table talking. It is rather cold here, colder than we had all anticipated, especially due to the high winds but when we were working today we warmed up due to all the activity.
