This morning we had the chance to sleep in and get up at our own time. There was an optional walk to the nearby falls, but I chose to stay back and have some quiet time before our work day.
We traveled to a small town called Bundanoon where we were volunteering with a wombat care organization. They had been contacted about 4 wombats which are living under the building of a health care center and have damaged some of the duct work. They don’t want to get rid of the wombats, but they need to make it so that the wombats cannot continue to damage the buildings. Our jobs were to help out with this process which involves laying down wire fencing around the edge of the building to prevent them from burrowing under. The goal is to corral them into one area of the decking which they can burrow under without damaging any ducts. John will continue to work on this project in the coming days (after we leave Bundanoon). We also had some folks helping the grounds crew to spread mulch around the trees.
In the afternoon we traveled a few minutes down the road to take a bush walk with the aim of seeing a wild mob of kangaroo. There were about 50 in the mob and it is mostly females and joeys, with only a few adult males.
We finished the day with dinner at the Bundanoon Hotel Pub where they happened to be having a Shri Lankan night with a special menu of curry dishes. We were joined by Wombat John (who we helped today with the fencing) and Kirsten (the owner of day 3’s wildlife sanctuary).
