On day 7 we got up early to clean and head out for our next destination. We had our longest bus drive so far (~4 hours) to get to the walkabout park where we will be volunteering.
We arrived around midday and spent some time going over the rules of the house we’re staying in and learning about some of the wildlife we might encounter. The park is 80 acres and is a mix of zoo-like enclosures and wild habitat. We first set off on a scavenger hunt to photograph as many species as we could. Next, ranger Monica took us for a bush walk where she taught us about the medicinal uses of various plants around the property.
We saw a peacock, a koala, an echidna, kangaroos, wallabys, wombats, snakes, birds, bats, Tasmanian devils, and emu.
After our tour around the park, our host made us lasagna dinner and we hung out in the big house.
On day 8 we spent the morning working to take apart one of the animal enclosures no longer being used.
After lunch, one of the park rangers took us around to learn a bit more about the animals residing there and then taught us how to throw a boomerang and the history behind how it was used for hunting.
